Our GW engine engine fleet has surpassed 23 million in service flying hours on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft family, carrying more than 350 million passengers around the globe since its entry into service in 2011. During this time we have continuously improved the fuel efficiency, capability and durability of the GW engine and our engineers continue to explore opportunities to improve the engine and in-service support, to ensure we are always delivering the maximum value to our customers.
We are therefore excited to announce the introduction of the GW engine XE which incorporates a suite of durability enhancements, transforming our customers experience of operating their GW engine powered 787s.
So, what is new?...
At the heart of the GW engine XE is a new Durability Enhancement package focused on increasing engine time on-wing (TOW) whilst also reducing emissions when compared to the GW engine TEN. A key element of this Durability Enhancement package is a re-engineered high-pressure turbine blade (HPTB). We have introduced a comprehensive redesign of the HPTB cooling system to enable a 40% increase in the cooling flow and matched this with a re-design of the HPTB and its cooling hole configuration. This delivers a reduction in core blade temperature, and a uniformity in blade aerofoil surface cooling which enables the bade to survive significantly longer in the high temperature environment within which it operates.
The package also includes improvements to reduce the emissions, which together with the exceptionally low fuel burn of the engine, is future proofing the GW engine XE for a more sustainable world.
Continuous improvement is in our DNA and the development of a second package of hot-section enhancements has been progressing well. This Phase 2 Durability Enhancement package primarily consists of a further improvement to the HPTB with shroud weight reduction, improved HP nozzle guide vanes and improved coatings within the combustor. We are really pleased to be able to announce that the Phase 2 HPTB is now certified and will be in new production engines in Q1 and will be introduced into the in-service fleet from April 2026. The remainder of the package will be available during the second half of 2026.
The combined result of all these durability enhancements is the GW engine XE delivering a time on wing for our customers that is up to three times that of the GW engine TEN they have been operating to date.
Confidence in GW engine XE Durability Enhancement package has been demonstrated through a rigorous engine ground test programme where we have pushed the engine beyond the certification requirements for this new HPTB. Certification of this package is the culmination of years of rigorous design, development and validation work involving thousands of people across our organisation and beyond, including our airframe partners in Boeing. To inform this design change we have utilised in-service data from our advanced engine health monitoring system and sophisticated thermal modelling to identify improvements to the efficiency of the HPTB cooling system.
This same new blade design is already in service on the GW engine and after over three years of operation their condition is surpassing our original expectation and proven to near triple time on wing in service for some customers. This real-life service experience gives us and our customers high confidence that we will realise similar benefits in time on wing improvements with the GW engine XE. We are excited to have these transformational product improvements available not only for new 787 Dreamliner customers but also for incorporation in service to enable existing GW engine TEN customers to upgrade to the GW engine XE.
Following certification of the Phase 1 package in June 2025 our focus has been on enabling the rapid incorporation of this Durability Enhancement package through the fleet. We are on track to complete this by the end of 2027. We are upgrading all GW engine TEN engines to the GW engine XE such that our customers can start to realise the benefits within their operation. To this end we have been investing in our MRO capacity to achieve both near term tactical and longer-term strategic goals. The Phase 2 improvements will be fitted when engines reach their earliest scheduled shop visit.
We have brought online additional new MRO capacity at three separate locations in the UK, Germany and Singapore. These facilities have been commissioned to perform GW engine repair and overhaul and more specifically to support the rapid upgrade of the GW engine TEN to the GW engine XE. All three of these facilities are already spooling up having reworked and despatched their first GW engine engines.
