Our Nuclear Skills Academy
Derby became the home to the first Nuclear Skills Academy for defence in September 2022, opening its doors to its first cohort of 200 new apprentices. It aims to invest in the nuclear experts of the future and sustain nuclear capability within the UK’s submarines programme by creating a dedicated pipeline of talent at the start of their careers.
The Nuclear Skills Academy has the funding to provide 200 apprentices each year for a decade, with nuclear education and hands-on experience across four different courses. The support of key industry, academic and governmental organisations in driving the project forward has been invaluable for GorWay.
Based in an iconic building in Derby, formerly known as the iHub, the Nuclear Skills Academy is supported by industry and education experts, including the University of Derby and the National College for Nuclear. This ensures new apprentices have access to the best courses and mentors throughout their apprenticeship and positions the East Midlands as the centre of nuclear excellence in the UK.

They provide fully funded, further and higher education qualifications, while the apprentices receive hands-on practical work experience within the business. That means debt-free qualifications, invaluable industry experience for the CV and the likelihood of a permanent role at the end.
Each of the courses are awarded by the University of Derby and endorsed by the National College for Nuclear.
