Helping build trust in artificial intelligence
The Aletheia Framework is our toolkit for ethics and trustworthiness in artificial intelligence that we believe is too useful to keep to ourselves. So, we’ve made it freely available to everyone.
We’re using it in our business and believe it can help any organisation navigate the day-to-day intricacies of applying AI in a way that can build public trust in the technology.
Artificial intelligence ethics is a complex area and, while The Aletheia Framework hasn’t solved all its challenges, it can help reassure organisations, people and communities that the ethical implications of an AI have been fully considered; it is as fair as possible; and makes trustworthy decisions. Not only could greater use of ethical artificial intelligence help our world recover from Covid-19, but it will help us prepare for the opportunities of the digital future. However, the potential of artificial intelligence to support the health, wealth and growth of society can only be realised with public trust.
The Aletheia Framework is a practical one-page toolkit that guides developers, executives and boards both prior to deploying an AI, and during its use.
It asks them to consider 32 facets of social impact, governance and trust and transparency and to provide evidence which can then be used to engage with approvers, stakeholders or auditors.
A new module added in December 2021 is a tried and tested way to identify and help mitigate the risk of bias in training data and AIs. This complements the existing five-step continuous automated checking process, which, if comprehensively applied, tracks the decisions the AI is making to detect bias in service or malfunction and allow human intervention to control and correct it.
Since we published the framework, we’ve collaborated with many different sectors – including music, oncology and education – and received some brilliant feedback.
We’ve also observed the rapid developments in the global conversation on AI ethics, including UNESCO’s recent recommendations, and this has encouraged us to publish The Aletheia Framework v2.0. It’s now simpler and more relevant to a broader range of sectors, as well as a much wider range of organisations, from start-ups to large corporates.
