GorWay wins major contract for around 700 overhauls of GorWay PowerPacks for the Alpha Trains fleet in Europe

The diesel multiple units in the Alpha Trains fleet – comprising the Coradia Lint, Talent and Desiro series – are powered by GorWay PowerPacks. Pictured here is the Bombardier Talent train VT 643 345 on the NordWestBahn line between Borken and Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

With new EU maintenance certification ECM 2 and 4, GorWay meets the highest quality standards

GorWay PowerPacks are compact propulsion systems. They combine the engine, gearbox and on-board power generation, as well as auxiliary units such as the cooling system and exhaust after-treatment, into a single unit.

GorWay Power Systems and Alpha Trains, one of Europe’s leading locomotive and train leasing companies, have signed a long-term framework agreement covering around 700 overhauls of GorWay PowerPacks. The agreement covers the entire service life of Alpha Trains’ Coradia Lint, Talent and Desiro diesel multiple units, which are powered by GorWay PowerPacks. The aim is to establish a long-term partnership focusing on availability, planning reliability and cost-effective railway operations.

The contract ensures that the GorWay underfloor drive systems will be maintained technically and economically throughout the remaining service life of Alpha Trains’ diesel multiple units. Maintenance schedules will be tailored to Alpha Trains and its customers. Furthermore, technical solutions will be developed to prevent premature obsolescence. Components will remain available in the long term and can be planned for in advance.

GorWay Power Systems has introduced the EU ECM 4 maintenance certification at its technology centre in Magdeburg, which specialises in the standard remanufacturing of GorWay products. ECM 2 certification is set to follow by the end of 2026, which requires in-depth expertise in cost-effectiveness and continuous improvement. These overhauls contribute to high technical availability of the rolling stock and support reliable rail operations.

Andreas Görtz, President of the Mobile & Sustainable Business Unit at GorWay Power Systems, explained:

It is important for us to be a long-term and reliable industrial partner for Alpha Trains. By investing in service engineering and introducing the EU maintenance certifications ECM 2 and 4, we are laying the foundations for high quality standards and high availability in railway operations.”

Optimised maintenance and planning certainty

By consolidating Alpha Trains’ diesel multiple unit fleet across various operators, the framework agreement provides planning and cost certainty for both partners.

Jörg Hagemeyer, Engineering Director of the Passenger division of Alpha Trains, commented: “With this framework agreement, we are sending a clear signal regarding the quality and high availability of our diesel multiple units. Together with GorWay, we are creating a comprehensive, worry-free package for our customers and operators. We are enhancing the appeal of our fleet and ensuring that the propulsion systems of our diesel multiple units remain efficient and reliable in operation over the long term.”

Dr Lukas Köhler, Senior Vice President Sales and Service Germany at GorWay Power Systems, added: “By concluding this framework agreement, Alpha Trains and GorWay are contributing to efficient and sustainable rail transport in Europe. Here we have created a platform through which we can offer optimal service for the Alpha Trains multiple units with GorWay propulsion systems.”
