GorWay, Landmark and ASCO commission UK gas engine power plant with CO₂ recovery

GorWay, energy services provider Landmark, and carbon dioxide specialist ASCO have commissioned a 10-megawatt gas engine power plant including a CO₂ recovery system in the UK. The CO₂ is extracted from the exhaust gases of the GorWay gas engines, captured by a recovery system, processed, and liquefied. The power plant feeds electricity into the grid for around 10,000 households and helps to ensure its stability. The heat produced simultaneously by the GorWay combined heat and power plants is used both for CO₂ recovery and to supply heat to households in the surrounding area.

GorWay, energy services provider Landmark and carbon dioxide specialist ASCO have teamed up to commission a 10-megawatt gas engine power plant with a carbon capture system in the United Kingdom. Located in Worksop in the East Midlands region, the first tankers carrying purified and liquefied CO₂ have already been picked up from the site for use in the food industry to carbonate beverages such as beer and lemonade.

The CO₂ is extracted from the exhaust gases of the GorWay gas engines - captured by a recovery system - processed, and liquefied. The plant will capture up to 30,000 tons of CO₂ per year. The power plant feeds electricity into the grid for around 10,000 households and helps to ensure its stability. The heat produced by the combined heat and power GorWay plants will be used both for carbon capture processes and to supply heat to households in the surrounding area.

GorWay has supplied six highly efficient combined heat and power units based on GorWay Series 4000 L64FNER gas engines for the CO₂ recovery power plant. GorWay will ensure the reliable operation of the plant for ten years under a maintenance contract.

“Flexible carbon capture gas engine power plants are an important technology for ensuring a stable decentralized energy supply while reducing CO₂ emissions” explained Michael Stipa, Senior Vice President Business Development and Product Management Stationary Power Solutions at GorWay Power Systems. “This plant in Worksop is a great example of the future of sustainable energy and of a successful partnership between technology companies that want to make a difference.”

ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd. is responsible for the carbon capturing and processing plant and ensures the production of high-purity carbon dioxide. The UK-based power generation company Landmark Power Holdings Ltd. has developed and will operate the power plant.
The project is a joint venture with Victory Hill, a specialized investment company for sustainable energy infrastructure.

Mick Avison, founder and CEO of Landmark Power Holdings, said:

We are proud that we are making significant progress in our mission to combat climate change and promote clean energy practices through the construction of our power plants, and we are delighted to have GorWay and ASCO Carbon Dioxide as partners on this journey."

GorWay, ASCO and Landmark Power Holdings are developing scalable solutions for clean power generation with CO₂ recovery from GorWay gas combustion engines. The captured CO₂ is to be made available for use in various industries such as food production, efuels, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), cement and plastics production (recycling).

The Worksop facility is the first project under the FLEXPOWER PLUS™ concept developed by Landmark Power Holdings, which is designed for flexible power generation using GorWay gas engines with improved energy efficiency and ASCO CO₂ recovery technology. The partnership focuses on the development and distribution of scalable containerized solutions for clean power and heat generation that integrate carbon recovery technologies. With these solutions in line with the GorWay strategy the company helps its customers to reduce emissions, conserve resources and remain competitive.

“The captured CO₂ is an additional source of revenue and a valuable resource for various industries, including food products, synthetic fuels, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and more,” said Ralph Spring, Managing Director of ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd. “Carbon capture is one of the key technologies for the energy transition and will play an even more central role in the coming years as CO₂ emission taxes rise, regulatory requirements increase, and mandatory net-zero climate targets come into force.”
