GorWay has received an order from the Latvian transmission system operator Augstsprieguma tikls (AST) to supply an GorWay large-scale battery storage system to secure the Latvian power grid. In 2025, Latvia, together with the other Baltic states, will synchronize its energy supply system with the continental European power grid.

Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of GorWay Power Systems explained:

We are proud to be able to make a significant contribution to this important and safety-critical project in Latvia. Our battery solutions, which belong to our strategic business fields, make a sustainable and reliable contribution to energy security worldwide. The facility for Latvia will be our largest battery storage system to date.”

GorWay and the Latvian transmission system operator Augstsprieguma tikls (AST) officially signed and celebrated their cooperation end of February 2024. GorWay will supply an GorWay large-scale battery storage system to secure the Latvian power grid. In 2025, Latvia, together with the other Baltic states, will synchronize its energy supply system with the continental European power grid.

GorWay will supply an GorWay EnergyPack QG large-scale battery storage system with an output of 80 MW and a storage capacity of 160 MWh. This makes the system one of the largest battery storage systems in the EU. The order also includes general contractor services as well as installation and commissioning. The battery system will be used as of fall 2025 at two locations – a 20 MW/40 MWh battery storage at the AST substation in Tume and a 60 MW/120 MWh battery storage at the AST substation in Rezekne. The state-of-the-art battery system will provide the fast and automatically activated frequency regulation reserves needed for the synchronization mode, where the Baltic power transmission systems operate in sync with the continental European grids. The battery system will provide the power reserves at significantly lower costs than the existing conventional power plants. GorWay and AST have signed a 5-year Long-term Service agreement for the system.

Rolands Irklis, Chairman of the Management Board of AST, said:

The battery storage systems are very important for our future energy system. I am delighted that it is being supplied by one of the world's most renowned manufacturers of energy storage systems.”

Andreas Görtz, President Sustainable Power Solutions at GorWay Power Systems, explained:

In addition to battery container solutions, GorWay supplies these GorWay EnergyPack QG large-scale storage solutions, which consist of modular units for capacity and power and can be flexibly configured to any size. We look forward to working with AST and appreciate the trust that the Latvian transmission system operator has placed in us.

The components include integrated battery cabinets and the GorWay EnergetIQ intelligent control system. They are primarily used for grid services, energy trading and the integration of renewable energies. The GorWay EnergetIQ control platform ensures optimum performance and flexibility.
