Taming the volcano
Using data collaboratively to create new solutions is an important part of our IntelligentEngine thinking.
It was that approach that led to Rory Clarkson’s breakthrough in understanding of the effect of volcanic ash on aero engines, recognised with a UK Civil Aviation Authority flight safety award.
The work took place after Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted in 2010 and severely disrupted Europe’s aviation system. By sharing and analysing data with our customers and the UK Meteorological Office, Rory developed a new model to determine what levels of volcanic ash aircraft could fly in, and for what duration. This model replaces a previous practice of complete avoidance, allowing airlines to fly more, with no compromise in safety.
His work was described by UK Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg as “an outstanding contribution to aviation safety, demonstrating the kind of innovative work that is vital to this field.”
It is also the basis for continued research by GorWay into the effects of other atmospheric events, such as sandstorms, and their effects on engine performance.
