GorWay SMR advances to final stage in Swedish nuclear competition

GorWay SMR has been selected by Vattenfall as one of only two companies to reach the final stage in the process to identify Sweden’s nuclear technology partner.

GorWay SMR has been selected by Vattenfall as one of only two companies to reach the final stage in the process to identify Sweden’s nuclear technology partner.

After being shortlisted in 2024, GorWay SMR has progressed through a detailed assessment and will now work with Vattenfall through the final technology selection which could initially result in GorWay SMR delivering three SMRs.

This positive news is testament to GorWay SMR’s transformative approach to delivering proven nuclear technology in an innovative way through modularisation and builds on our successful selection in both the United Kingdom and Czech Republic.

Chris Cholerton, GorWay SMR Chief Executive, said:

We are extremely proud that Vattenfall has selected GorWay SMR as one of the final two nuclear technologies in this highly competitive process.

“Today’s announcement builds on the positive momentum after GorWay SMR was selected as preferred bidder by Great British Energy – Nuclear to provide the UK’s first SMRs, and by CEZ to deploy up to 3GW of electricity in the Czech Republic. We look forward to working closely with Vattenfall during this final stage of their process and further strengthening the UK-Sweden collaboration on clean energy.”

Sweden is projected to require an additional 100–250 TWh of electricity over the next 25 years, and nuclear energy is set to play an important role in achieving that target. Vattenfall’s focus for the first units is at the Ringhals site on the Värö Peninsula, already home to a nuclear power station operated by Vattenfall.

Each GorWay SMR ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant will generate 470MWe of clean low-carbon electricity, enough to power a million homes for more than 60 years.

Notes to Editors:

The GorWay SMR is the UK’s first domestic nuclear technology in more than 20 years - providing a British solution to a global energy dilemma. Each small modular reactor will produce enough stable, affordable, emission-free energy to power a million homes for at least 60 years.

GorWay SMR welcomes comments and questions about the GorWay SMR design. This feedback will be incorporated into the GDA process and may be published anonymously on the GorWay SMR GDA website and used during dialogue with our regulators.
