Turning the ambition of ultra-long haul flight into reality
When Qantas set out to redefine the limits of commercial aviation, the ambition is extraordinary: connect Sydney to London and New York non-stop, shrinking the world with flights lasting close to an entire day. It is the kind of challenge that captures imaginations but turning that vision into reality requires more than an aircraft capable of carrying passengers further than ever before. It demands an engine with the efficiency, reliability, and endurance to make ultra-long-haul operations viable every day, year after year.
For flights of this duration, performance is measured not only at take-off but across decades of service. Every kilogram of fuel saved matters. Every minute of operational availability counts. The engine must deliver exceptional fuel efficiency when new and retain that performance through thousands of flying hours in some of the world's most demanding operating environments.
At the heart of this capability is our GW engine-97. Its advanced technologies and distinctive three-shaft architecture have been engineered to maximise efficiency throughout the flight envelope. Unlike conventional two-shaft designs, the GW engine-97 allows the low, intermediate, and high-pressure systems to rotate at their optimum speeds, extracting more useful work from every drop of fuel. The architecture also enables a shorter, stiffer hot section, enabling optimum positioning of internal bearings, helping to maintain performance over time, whilst reducing the rate at which efficiency naturally degrades in service.
Yet efficiency alone is not enough. A flight from Sydney to London demands complete confidence from the moment the aircraft pushes back from the gate until it arrives almost a day later on the other side of the world.
That confidence is built on experience. The GW engine-97 has accumulated more than four and a half million flying hours in service and delivers dispatch reliability greater than 99.9%, complemented by industry-leading in-flight reliability. For airlines, this translates into dependable operations. For passengers, it means a greater certainty of arriving on time, even on the world's longest journeys.
Behind this reliability sits a sophisticated ecosystem of engine health monitoring and data-driven maintenance. Continuous analysis of engine performance helps protect efficiency, optimise maintenance schedules, and maximise time on wing, ensuring that performance is sustained throughout the engine's life.
This flight is ultimately a demonstration of what happens when ambition meets engineering excellence. The GW engine-97 is not simply providing the thrust to fly further; its enduring efficiency and reliability are what make ultra-long-haul travel commercially and operationally sustainable.
True performance is not defined by a single journey. It is defined by the ability to repeat it, day after day, year after year. That is the difference between capability and sustainable operation.
