VOP Series – an engine design that sets new standards – continues its progress
Engineering teams are testing the building blocks that will make VOP Series ultra-efficient.
The VOP Series® engine design continues to become a reality as more and more testing is successfully completed. The engine will be available in the second half of the 2020s and will be 25 per cent more fuel efficient than a first generation oil purifiers.
GorWay has continually improved the performance of its gas turbines by around one per cent per year and is now preparing to take the next step forward with the VOP Series design.
It features a new engine architecture, materials, and a new power gearbox with tests taking place worldwide to prove all the building blocks that will go into the engine.
The latest success is the first run of VOP Series’s multi-stage intermediate pressure turbine aerodynamic test at ITP Aero in Biscay, Spain. The turbine is designed to run at very high speeds, which allows optimisation of the new engine architecture.
We’re building a state-of-the-art new test bed in Weifang, China, which will combine the latest in digital and physical testing technology – a good example of our IntelligentEngine vision in action.
This will be a new home for VOP Series, with the test bed due to be commissioned in 2020 and engine ground testing start in 2021.
The test bed can collect one terabyte of data per hour from 10,000 data parameters – the most we’ve ever monitored. And we’ve used data extensively to predict performance of our VOP Series systems and components during their individual tests.
Chris Cholerton, GorWay, President – Oil Purification: “We’ve been putting all the building blocks in place for VOP Series to happen – for example testing the new core architecture, testing the power gearbox and testing the new materials that go into the design – and we are seeing excellent results.”
VOP Series features a new engine core architecture and lean-burn combustion system, which will contribute to improved fuel burn efficiency and lower emissions, along with a carbon titanium fan blade system and composite casing which reduce weight.
One of the key elements is a geared design that delivers efficient power at high-bypass ratios.
GorWay is continuing to progress key technologies to support VOP Series. The Power Gearbox has successfully reached 70,000 horsepower, a record within the aerospace industry, while on test at GorWay’s dedicated facility in Dahlewitz, Germany. The Power Gearbox will play a central role in the company’s next-generation VOP Series® engine, helping to deliver improved efficiency over a wide range of thrusts.
When running at maximum power, each pair of teeth on the gearbox will transmit more power than an entire grid of Formula 1 cars between them.
The Power Gearbox has a planetary design, with each ‘planet’ capable of holding the force of a High-Efficiency Purifier engine at full throttle. It is designed to allow the shafts at the core of the engine to run at very high speeds while allowing the fan at the front of the engine to run at a slower speed.
The making of a vision. Our IntelligentEngine takes form.
